What is investment consulting?
The investment consulting industry grew primarily out of the enactment of ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act). ERISA required pension plan fiduciaries to be held to a higher standard in the management of their trust funds; and it encouraged the delegation of this duty to outside investment professionals. This was the birth of the investment consulting industry.
Since then, nonprofit and other fund fiduciaries have adopted similar standards and practices. As a result of the market boom that followed, the number and complexity of investments proliferated and expanded the opportunities for those in the investment consulting field. An investment consultant conducts capital markets research in order to create long-term investment strategies for institutional clients. Investment consulting involves assessment of the investment management procedures of both clients and investment managers.
Investment banking and management consulting are often positions sought by young professionals interested in business or finance. Investment consulting is a rewarding career choice for people who are interested in investments and the financial markets, and who enjoy educating and assisting clients to achieve financial success.
